Albert Bierstadt studied art in Düsseldorf before returning to America and becoming associated with the Hudson River School of painters. On several journeys into the expanding American West, Bierstadt combined to stunning effect the landscape skills he'd honed in Germany with the detail and luminism he perfected during his New York years. As a young artist, Christopher Marley spent many years in tropical regions the world over where insect populations are flamboyant and profuse. His fascination with the creatures gradually prevailed over an initial phobia, leading to lengthy study of entomology and to arduous excursions to locales where the gaudiest beetles dwell.

Marley's work with insects reflects his desire to impose order on a scuttling, clicking, and swarming world. His minimalist arrangements of outrageous color invite inspection and wonder; preconceptions fade as we contemplate these creatures' breathtaking beauty. Although the ensembles are anything but organic, the colors are natural and not enhanced or digitally altered in any way.

Marley asserts that an increased appreciation for these jewel-like beasts can help slow the willful destruction of their habitat - which, unlike individual collection, is the only true threat an insect species faces.

We are innately drawn to the human face; that must explain why Chuck Close's many portraits are irresistible. Working from a photograph of his subject, Close puts a grid on the photo and on the canvas and then carefully applies color, cell by cell. Over the years, the grid has evolved from a near-invisible aid for transferring the image to a bold compositional element. Abstract up close, his portraits are dazzling mosaics of iridescent color that we are hard-wired to discern as a nose, a mouth, eyes, and other features.

Chuck Close (b. 1940) has been a groundbreaking figure in American art since the 1970s. In 2000 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.

One of the original Humorous Figuration artists of the early 1960s, Roy De Forest studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and San Francisco State College and went on to teach at the University of California, Davis, from 1965 to 1982. His colorful, whimsical paintings and sculptures have been exhibited worldwide and are in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and many other institutions.

Considered one of the most visionary proposals of its time, this design for an addition to Westminster was the result of an unlikely collaboration. At the time, John Pollard Seddon, an architect of the High Victorian style, was near the end of his career. His most celebrated work (University College of Wales at Aberystwyth) had been completed for 40 years. The much younger Edward Beckitt Lamb was influenced by F.F.A. Voysey and the Arts & Crafts movement. Together the two dreamed up a majestic monument to the British Empire. Though not executed, their design called for grand-scale halls and a massive tower on the crossing of Westminster Abbey.

Over centuries the unfinished Westminster has elicited several proposals; the design by Seddon and Lamb remains one of the most ambitious London has ever seen. Renovations to Westminster Abbey are scheduled to be completed for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012. The pyramidal roof, constructed following damage during World War II, will be replaced by a corona.

After years of rubbing elbows with the artistic avant-garde of Montparnasse, Diego Rivera (1886-1957) returned to Mexico soon after a very different encounter with the Renaissance masters Giotto and Michelangelo. His commitment to Mexico's recently completed revolution and his new interest in fresco painting led Rivera to participate in a program of public works, murals on broad expanses of wall that anyone could visit, painted in a straightforward style indebted to pre-Columbian and folk art.

Later, a mural painted for San Francisco's Pacific Stock Exchange attracted the attention of the Detroit Institute of Arts, which commissioned him to paint the walls of its classical Garden Court. His theme, the manufacture of automobiles through human labor, pleased Edsel Ford, the president of the Ford Motor Company, who agreed to fund the project and became a great champion of the artist. The vast factory Ford built on the Rouge River, where Rivera spent days sketching, provided the images for the mural's largest panels, including the one shown here.

The acclaimed author-artist Edward Gorey had a lifelong interest in the theater. His participation in the Broadway production of Dracula garnered three Tony Award nominations, and he wrote and produced engaging and quirky plays that appeared both on and off Broadway and on Cape Cod. As a world-class balletomane, Gorey (1925-2000) was known for having attended most of the performances of the New York City Ballet between 1957 and 1983-the years of George Balanchine's reign as the company's choreographer and artistic director. The untitled, gleefully chaotic work reproduced in this puzzle might be seen as Gorey's celebration of the theater, which brought him great pleasure and inspiration.

It's artist-author Edward Gorey (1925-2000) at his darkly mischievous best, with Frawgge Mfrg Co portraying a cloud of chaos and doom hanging over the impeccably manicured trappings of a vaguely Victorian society.

What more mayhem could possibly ensue in the drawing room of this mysterious manufacturing magnate? Frawgge Mfrg Co seems to have become a resounding success, if its apparent founder's handsome top hat and plush, fur-lined overcoat are any indication. But looking stoically down from his portrait on the frog-papered wall, our beloved titan of industry must be wondering what sort of nightmare his success hath wrought. Inside, the tea party looks to have gone horribly awry, while outside we might find ourselves witness to no less than three different homicides.

Widely hailed as America's greatest architect ever, Frank Lloyd Wright was also a peerless designer of interior furnishings, such as art glass windows. His genius glows from the piece reproduced in this jigsaw puzzle-a semiabstract interpretation of a cactus in bloom, constructed by the architect's students to an original Wright design. This exuberantly colorful puzzle becomes ever more satisfying as its deceptively simple geometric elements take shape and grow into a complex and balanced composition.

Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956) opted for an early exit from high school in California to study with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League of New York. After gleaning what appealed to him from the Regionalists, Mexican muralists, and Surrealists, Pollock worked for the Federal Art Project from 1938 to 1942. By the mid-1940s Pollock was painting in a wholly abstract manner, and in 1947 he arrived at the drip and splash style with which he is most often associated. Affixing canvases to a wall, the floor, or the ground if painting outdoors, Pollock dripped and poured commercial house paint from cans and arranged it using sticks, trowels, or knives, sometimes augmenting it with sand, broken glass, or foreign matter, as Pollock stated it. He placed great import on being able to walk around such paintings and work on them from all four sides. Such action painting, opined artists and critics, expressed or revealed the unconscious moods of the artist. Pollock's drip paintings, as Willem de Kooning said, broke the ice for the Abstract Expressionists who followed Pollock. In 1964 Springbok Editions issued Convergence as a 340-piece jigsaw that was touted as the world's most difficult puzzle. With this 1,000-piece reemergence of Convergence, Pomegranate just about triples the challenge. Best of luck to all aspiring solvers!

John James Audubon (American, b. Haiti, 1785-1851) was a daring and colorful character renowned for his adventurous nature, artistic genius, and obsessive interest in birds. He traveled the United States in search of his winged subjects, painting almost five hundred of the seven hundred or so regularly occurring North American bird species-including the stunningly beautiful White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus). This exotic-looking black-and-white seabird-with a yellow bill and a tail that can be longer than its body-plunges into the ocean to catch fish and squid. It nests on oceanic islands in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide.

In the opening decades of the twentieth century, New York stood as the grandest expression of the United States's technological and financial world dominance. Joseph Stella's monumental painting The Voice of the City of New York Interpreted, a panoramic, five-paneled view of 1920s Manhattan, evokes the dizzying dynamism and awe-inspiring spectacle of the city. Measuring more than twenty feet long, The Voice of the City presents key Manhattan landmarks at night, starting on the west side with the Battery, then moving to the middle of the island with Broadway's Great White Way (featured on this puzzle) and the skyscrapers, and ending in the east with the Brooklyn Bridge. Below are tunnels for trains, electricity, and plumbing. Stella (1877-1946), who immigrated to New York in 1896 from a small town in southern Italy, interpreted American technology in religious terms, conveyed by the altarpiece format and deep, saturated colors that give the appearance of stained glass windows.

Purchased in 1937 from Stella's Newark-based gallery, Rabin and Krueger, The Voice of the City reflects the Newark Museum's commitment, dating from its founding, to educate, inspire, and transform individuals of all ages and the local, regional, national, and international communities it servers.

American artist Kathy DeZarn Beynette lists the art of children as an inspiration. She also has a love for animals and for the written word. American artist Koo Schadler is highly skilled at painting with egg tempera, a paint made from powdered pigments, egg yolks, and water. Egg tempera was widely used before the sixteenth century, when oil paint was invented.

Ms. Schadler used egg tempera to create this beautiful portrait of a Crème d'Argent rabbit - a rare and special breed with a calm, friendly disposition and very unusual fur. These rabbits have dense, fluffy cream-colored fur with an orange undercoat.
